Overview
he Modena chemical physical treatment plant is designed to treat industrial waste and hazardous and non hazardous special liquid waste. The Modena chemical waste treatment plant treats WTE process wastewater, leachate from landfills, washing liquids and contaminated meteoric water and has a capacity of 70,000 tonnes per year. The plant is equipped with two treatment and purification lines, which can operate in parallel to ensure continuity of operations during maintenance works on one of the two lines.
- Mixing and equalization of WTE wastewater and of the liquid waste delivered by tankers from external customers into a tank upstream of the treatment section, in which the liquids are kept stirred
- From the mixing tank, the flow is sent to the treatment section, where pH is checked by measuring out sulphuric acid and ferric chloride as a flocculant for the clariflocculation process, followed by the neutralisation phase with lime milk and precipitation of heavy metals. The flow then undergoes bivalent metal abatement with a sequestering reagent and coagulation by measuring out an anionic polyelectrolyte
- The treated flow is recirculated into a clarifier where the liquid sludge is extracted from the bottom and sent for thickening and then dewatering by filter pressing. The clarified flow coming out of the clarifier undergoes a further filtration phase on quartzite filters if necessary; it is then sent to the adjacent wastewater treatment plant of the city of Modena for organic load and nitrogen abatement. The plant is equipped with two treatment lines which can operate in parallel to ensure continuity of operations during maintenance works on one of the two lines
- The sludge produced is stored in mobile containers and sent for disposal in authorised landfills
- The storage and treatment tanks are kept under suction; the captured air is treated before release into the atmosphere with an activated carbon system
The incoming liquid waste is stored in two semi underground reinforced concrete pools with a capacity of 520 m3 each and in three 100 m3 storage tanks. The tanks and storage pools are directly connected to the VE equalisation pool, which is the first stage of the chemical physical treatment. The plant is also equipped with a 25 m3 tank dedicated to the storage of acid waste to be fed directly into the treatment pools.
